“The PowerShell App Deployment Toolkit provides a set of functions to perform common application deployment tasks and to interact with the user during a deployment. It simplifies the complex scripting challenges of deploying applications in the enterprise, provides a consistent deployment experience and improves installation success rates.”Development Team

Overview

The PowerShell App Deployment Toolkit was launched in August 2013 and is a joint collaboration between Seán Lillis and Dan Cunningham.

Especially for those without a lot of PowerShell experience, this set of capabilities address most everything you might want to do from an installation perspective. That is it can perform checks and actions and present customizable user prompts all with the task of deployment in mind.

Key things to know

  • User Interface

The PowerShell App Deployment Toolkit can be used to provide a user interface for installations to show messages before, during or after installation including prompting for a response. You can prompt the user to close applications and even prevent applications from launching while an installation is in progress. You can let the end user defer the installation a set number of times or for a set number of days until an optional deadline is reached. Reboot prompts, balloon tip notifications, notification of insufficient disk space and more including the ability to brand the dialogs as you see fit.

  • Checks and Actions

It can also perform several functions that you may wish to execute before or after a setup or to manage the execution of the setup itself. It can perform checks as well as the actual installation and removal of software. It can send a sequence of keys to an application window to automate a response. It can test network and power connectivity. It also does most of the things you might do inside your setup such as copy/delete files, get/set/remove registry keys/values, get/set ini file keys and values, check file versions, pin or unpin applications from the start menu or task bar, create shortcuts, refresh desktop icons, and more.

  • SCCM Integration

The PowerShell App Deployment Toolkit can handle SCCM exit codes, including time sensitive dialogs supporting SCCM’s Fast Retry feature to provide more accurate SCCM Reporting. It supports the CM12 application model by providing an install and uninstall deployment type for every deployment script and you can bundle multiple application installations to overcome the supported limit of 5 applications in the CM12 application dependency chain.
