“Symantec Ghost Solution Suite is an industry leading and award winning solution for imaging and deploying desktops, laptops, tablets, and servers.”Symantec

Overview

Ghost became a common verb synonymous with drive imaging as the original dominating imaging solution. It can of course image and deploy devices like desktops, laptops, tablets and servers and for key operating systems like Windows, Mac and Linux. Ghost Solution Suite includes the Deployment Solution console and its core capabilities for operating system deployment, migration and cross-platform management. Note that Deployment Solution is on v8 at the time of this article). Ghost includes features like its Ghost Cast Server and DeployAnywhere functions.

Key things to know

  • Connector.

    Imaging and Unattended Deployment Support

Of course Ghost handles imaging, but it also supports scripted deployments which I think very important. You always want your image to be easily reproducible so you can update and tweak it over time and the best way to do that is via a scripted installation (then create and deploy your image to realize faster deployments). It also facilitates user state migration.

  • Connector.

    GhostCast Server

GhostCast Server (referred to as Ghost Multicast Server prior to v7.5) allow Ghost to move images over a network. It is usually used in one of two ways: to pull an image from a client computer and save it on a network drive, or to push an image from a network drive to write over a disk or partition on many client computers. Multicast is a helpful technology when applying an image to more than 5 computers at a time. Ghost also supports a Directed Broadcast option (multicasting to a particular subnet).

  • Connector.

    DeployAnywhere

With DeployAnywhere, you can have a Ghost image of any machine configuration and can deploy it to a machine of a different hardware configuration. It makes the changes necessary to get it up and running by running DeployAnywhere (ghDplyAw32.exe) on the imaged system before booting to the OS. Needed drivers can be stored on local media or mapped via a network drive.
