Side by Side Installations (SxS installations) refers to the ability to generate packages that can be installed on the same system and run independently without conflict. It can be challenging to configure an installation to run without conflict alongside another instance or version of the same application and it is not a common use case. However, if such is important to you and your selection of an application packaging solution, I highly recommend having a through test case you can leverage to test the tools you consider purchasing. The ability to support Side by Side Installations is typically less of a feature and more a matter of good documentation and guidance. That said, vendors that have taken the time to support Side by Side Installations in some special way will be sure to impress you with what they have done.
This is one of many application packaging features covered here at AppDetails. When considering what features are important to you, we recommend you also contemplate the importance of a good GUI Editor, PowerShell Support, an MSI to App-V Converter, and other application packaging features.
