Unified Endpoint Management (UEM)

Unified Endpoint Management (UEM) is a term coined by Gartner to describe the convergence of management technologies (desktop methods and mobile methods). While desktop devices are typically managed by systems management agents, mobile devices are more locked down. Management of mobile devices is much more policy based resulting in an environment where what you can and cannot do is tightly controlled by the operating system via managed profiles. Changes to a profile will enable or disable various user and management capabilities on mobile devices. “Mobile devices” have been traditionally limited to phones and tablets due to their mobile operating systems. However, the latest versions of Windows and macOS are providing more and more mobile (profile based) management capabilities. As time goes on, it is expected that desktop operating systems will adopt more and more mobile management methods until all are managed in the same way.

When selecting a management product, it is important to choose one that has a strong enterprise mobility management strategy because the day will come when installed management agents are restricted from doing the things they do today. We are already seeing many desktop management solutions offer mobile management capabilities so you have a single pane of glass by which to manage all devices. Products like Airwatch already boast desktop management capabilities although such functionality is limited to the current state of the technology available to manage Windows and macOS as one would their mobile OS counterparts.

This is one of many enterprise mobility management (EMM) features covered here at AppDetails. When considering what features are important to you, we recommend you also contemplate the importance BYOD, MDM, MAM and UEM capabilities along with other common mobile management features.
