multicast

When it comes to systems deployment solutions, multicast support is often associated with image based deployments. Because the payload is so large (often gigabytes in size) a unicast (moving it from the server to a single computer) can be less productive than a multicast (moving it from the server to multiple computers). Clients are configured to listen for the multicast traffic and, depending on the implementation, can request any packets missed to be rebroadcasted. When sending more than 10 or so systems (and they are all on the same network segment) multicast delivery can offer a significant time savings.
