Hardware Inventory is a very standard and basic capability for any systems management solution. What can be pulled from a system leverages standards that all vendors exploit making the difference in the data collected negligible if not identical. Some hardware vendors may offer special WMI extensions to populate custom hardware details such as the last time a desktop case was opened up, or how long a notebook screen has been up/open. What you can get and how each vendor provides it makes this something more interesting to customers who have standardized on a single hardware vendor, but even then the “special” data you can get may be of questionable value. All this tends to rank Hardware Inventory rather low in a ranked list of systems management features.
This is one of many systems management features covered here at AppDetails. When considering what features are important to you, we recommend you also contemplate the importance of a strong software inventory, application deployment, an intuitive user console and other systems management features.
