A management console is an integral part of any systems management solution. This is the primary (sometimes the only) interface for managing systems across your environment. A management console is therefore also the means by which you enjoy most all of the other benefits you are prioritizing in selecting a solution. It could not be more important. Some systems are delivered as suites that may have multiple consoles. On the plus side you get a focused user experience for the individual problem it addresses. On the downside, you have separate interfaces to learn and switch between in your day to day operations. Unsurprisingly, a single, unified console delivering a “single pane of glass” experience for all your systems management functions is the overwhelming preference. The demand for a single console increases as the size of an organization decreases which is a key focus when considering scalability and market focus. It is not common to encounter products with interfaces which are difficult and overly complex to navigate, and this is especially the case for users without strong client management experience. Typically, when we see desperate management consoles from a single vendor, the solution is either very complex and/or it was the result of separate product acquisitions and the work of unifying them is simply not yet complete.
A web based console is the leading preference in recent years as it means you need not install a management console on planned systems to be used for management. Further, consoles can be responsive (or automatically adjusted based on the size of the screen) in order to inherently support mobile devices such as tablets and even phones.
This is one of many systems management features covered here at AppDetails. When considering what features are important to you, we recommend you also contemplate the importance of a strong software inventory, application deployment, an intuitive user console and other systems management features.
