Patch management can apply to both operating systems and for applications. Microsoft offers WSUS for Windows and some of its core products like Office, but third party solutions add other operating systems and applications to their feeds. For applications, “patches” typically come in the form of an updated setup for a newer version of the software. In this way third party application patching is similar to that of a pre-packaged application feed as discussed in the AppDetails section on Application Deployment. For operating systems, some licensing restrictions (like those imposed by Red Hat Linux) can add limit or add to the complexity of inclusion in patching products.
This is one of many systems management features covered here at AppDetails. When considering what features are important to you, we recommend you also contemplate the importance of a strong software inventory, application deployment, an intuitive user console and other systems management features.
