Remote control software is such an integral part of a systems management solution, some use the term interchangeably. I remember interviewing candidates for a Systems Management Server (SMS) Administrator position and encouraging one person after another that what they meant by having SMS experience was essentially that they had made use of its remote control capability to help end users. Microsoft offers a multitude of duplicative solutions for remote control and have been retiring some and refocusing on others for years. There are also a number of third party point solutions on the market for remote control as well as free and open source options. Finally, some systems management vendors offer their own remote control solution.
Things to watch out for include, security features such as role based access controls and logging capabilities. An ability to support multiple operating systems may or may not be a concern based on your environment, but these days most want to see at least Windows and Mac support.
As this is a commonly used tool, you’ll likely want to choose one you are truly happy with. This is where having it come part of your systems management solution can be either a good or a bad thing. If you really like a third party product and are not going to use the one that comes with your systems management solution, are you paying for that feature unnecessarily? On the contrary, if you are comparing two systems management solutions and one includes a remote control tool and the other does not, you’ll need to consider the additional investment in your comparison of the two products.
