99% of the time, an application patch is delivered as a full installer that both installs fresh and/or replaces an older version in need of updating. However, some organizations handle them as patches and others as packages. I think it largely depends upon what group is responsible but I’m interested to hear advocates for one approach over another; particularly those that see Patching as a preference.

Do you deliver application updates as patches? If so, what benefits do you see? This is the traditional security focused approach.

Do you deliver applications as packages (replace and redeploy). This is the traditional operations focused approach.

In the place I work, it is packages. Java is allowed to auto update. Same for Adobe products, Firefox, chrome etc. We are evaluating a solution from flexera for updates but it not seen as very important
